Message from the President Private
certifiers and compliance issues are in the news again. I don’t
understand why councils have no say in the choice of which private
certifier is appointed. After all, the certifiers are simply acting on
behalf of the consent authority, which is usually the local council.
Perhaps I should be asking our local Member for Epping why local
councils have little control over the certification process. A good
example of this lack of control has occurred here in Beecroft. Observant
residents will be aware of the metallic structures on top of Beecroft
Place, our new shopping and unit complex. When I raised the issue with
Council staff as to why such an intrusive metallic structure on the roof
was allowed, I was told, council had no say in the installation and
that it was the private certifier who had approved it.
I do have some good news: Beecroft House, the proposed women’s shelter
at the former Jamieson House, is on track for an opening later this
week. Details of the opening are below.
And finally, the Trust has been following up with our State Minister
Dominic Perrottet’s office on a number of local issues. The current
concern I have raised with Minister Perrottet has been how the Sydney
Metro has been project managing the rehabilitation of the bushland along
the former haulage road behind Cheltenham Oval. In my
correspondence I have also included Hornsby Council, who will be taking
control of the area once the Metro contract is completed.
Hopefully we will have some answers soon. It does take time for the
respective government agencies to reply.
